Trail mix is more than just a snack, it’s a childhood memory.

It’s one of those easy-to-pack snacks that your mom would feed you in the car, at the beach or as a perfect complement to your lunch. I can vividly remember eating handful after delicious handful of nuts and fruit with a hint of chocolatey sweetness in so many places. Once I became an adult, my LOVE for trail mix didn’t leave me. Shortly after starting my REAL food journey, I took a gander at the ingredients in my favorite trail mix while grocery shopping. The spread ranged from RED 40 dye to added oils. WHHAAAAT?!

I felt like I got hit with a ton of bricks when I realized even my seemingly “healthy” snack mix was filled with highly processed junk. So, I set out to create a simple version that not only I could snack on, but my husband, kids and family could enjoy. This trail mix is the perfect rainy day activity when you’re looking to have a little healthy fun with your kids.

Trail Mix 101

No added oils! Make sure that your nuts and seeds do not have any added oils. The ingredients listed should be the nut itself, and maybe a small amount of salt.

Chocolate is a treat. Whenever making a big batch of trail mix, I’ll often make half the batch with chocolate chips and half without. If you’re adding chocolate to your trail mix, just remember chocolate is a treat! We typically use the brand Enjoy Life’s chocolate chips because they use FfL-friendly ingredients.

Save money by purchasing your nuts from Costco or a bulk bin at your local co-op.
