Oatmeal Honey Scrub (Gentle Face + Body Exfoliating Scrub)

This homemade scrub will leave your skin feeling clean and healthy. Your skin will look radiant, without having to spend much time or money in the process.

One of the best ways to remove dead skin cells and other debris clogging your pores is to use a gentle exfoliating face scrub. The good news is, all you need are three simple ingredients and you’ll be on your way to radiant, oil-free skin.

Looking for a thoughtful gift to give a friend, family member or fellow mama? Little luxuries go a long way. Everyone will love the thoughtfulness behind the gesture just as much as they’ll love their all-natural scrub. Just mix it up, put it in a cute little jar and add a tag!

This Oatmeal Honey Scrub can be used on your face or entire body to help balance oil production, remove debris and dead skin cells from your pores and minimize breakouts. It’ll leave your skin breathing freely and with a healthy glow!

Regular exfoliation will

  • Help stimulate collagen synthesis (which keeps your skin looking tight and young)
  • Give you a more evened out complexion and skin tone
  • Help prevent breakouts and blemishes
  • Boost circulation and stimulate oxygen-rich blood to nourish the skin’s surface
  • Help other skincare products like moisturizers and serums penetrate deeper into the skin

Why use this homemade scrub rather than commercial scrubs?

Well, for one, it’s cost-effective. More importantly, it’s all natural.

Most commercial beauty and personal care products (scrubs, lotions, creams, makeup) contain ingredients that are harmful to your skin. The problem is, these products don’t just coat your skin, they penetrate it. They’re absorbed through the skin and can make their way straight into the bloodstream. Some of these toxic chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption, skin allergies and even cancer.

Why exfoliate your skin with grains?

Exfoliation is key to remove dead skin cells and other debris clogging your pores. If those dead cells don’t shed and your pores remain clogged, it can result in dry, dull flaky patches, not to mention stubborn whiteheads and blackheads. Simply put, it’ll help keep your skin silky smooth, give you a more evened out complexion, eliminate breakouts and boost your skin’s radiance… hello, healthy glow!

Using finely ground grains is a gentle, cost-effective and natural way to do this.

Why these ingredients ROCK

  • Oatmeal: The coarse texture of ground oatmeal is an excellent way to get rid of excess oil and clean up clogged pores. Plus, oatmeal provides anti-inflammatory properties. Win, win!
  • Honey: Honey is one of nature’s MVPs. It has antibacterial properties, as well as antiviral and antifungal properties. It’s a natural humectant and nourishes the skin, leaving it soft and supple. Plus, its antibacterial powers can help combat breakouts and bouts of acne.
  • Oil: Oil will not only help moisturize your skin, it also increases collagen metabolism (buh-bye wrinkles) and has positive antimicrobial affects.

Which oil is best for your skin type?

Your happiest, healthiest skin is achieved through using the right products with the proper ingredients. When you try a new beauty product, it’s always important to observe how it leaves your skin overall. Because different skin types thrive on different ingredients, here are a few things to consider…

  • Oily skin: It sounds counterintuitive, but even oily skin benefits from the right, lightweight oil in a facial scrub. It can help stabilize and regulate your skin’s natural oils, which makes you less oily overall. Jojoba oil (for moderately oily skin) and grapeseed oil (for extremely oily skin) are great options!
  • Dry skin: If your skin in on the dry side, sweet almond or avocado oil are great additions to your scrub. You can also add olive oil, although it tends to be a bit heavier.
  • Normal skin: If you don’t typically break out and your skin isn’t extremely dry, avocado or argan oil are great options for you to use in your scrub. Both are rich and soothing, high in vitamin A and help prevent skin damage.

Adding essential oils

You can further customize this scrub by adding your favorite essential oil. A few drops of chamomile or lavender will have a soothing affect, while the refreshing citrus smell of sweet orange or grapefruit oil will lighten your mood.

Using it as a face mask, rather than a scrub

This mixture also works well as a face mask. Simply apply it to your face and after 10-20 minutes, rinse it off with warm water and a wash cloth.

Puffy eyes? Refrigerate your mixture before using it to create a mask that helps reduce inflammation.

Tips for using your scrub

  • Give your face a good wash before using it. You want to remove any excess dirt or makeup from your skin’s surface so you have a clean base to start with.
  • Gently massage for 1-2 minutes, in a circular direction. Scrubbing excessively can be harsh on your skin.
  • Wash off with cold water.
  • After washing your face and exfoliating, follow up with a good moisturizer.
  • Take it a step further by using it on your feet, legs or entire body.

5 from 1 review

  • Yield: 1 Cup 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (finely ground in a blender or food processor)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup almond, argan, avocado or jojoba oil
  • 1 drop essential oil of choice (optional)
  • 1 medium mason jar or container

Instructions

Face Scrub:

  1. Place oats in food processor or blender. Pulse until oats are finely ground and resemble a coarse powder.
In a small mixing bowl, combine oats, honey, oil and essential oils (if using any). Mix to create a thick paste.
  2. Store the scrub in a glass jar.

Use:

  1. Just before using, add a few drops of water or oil to remoisten the mixture (if needed), so it’s more spreadable. If you’re using water, be sure to add a few drops only to what you’ll be using. Bacteria growth can occur in products that contain water, so adding it decreases the shelf-life.
  2. Give your face a good wash before using your scrub. Scoop some of the scrub mixture into your hands. Gently massage for 1-2 minutes, in a circular direction. Wash off with warm water and then follow up by splashing your face with cold water. Pat your face dry.
  3. After exfoliating, follow up with a good moisturizer. You can use this scrub 2x per week.

It will last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks when stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Avoid getting water into the scrub, as this can cause it to mold. To extend the shelf life: Keep it refrigerated. Always use clean and dry utensils when scooping out the scrub to prevent introducing moisture and bacteria. Check for signs of spoilage. If you notice any changes in color, smell, or texture, or if mold develops, discard the scrub.
