Postpartum Soothing Spray (For Recovery & Relief)

A must-have for your post-partum healing

Birthing a baby is a messy job and things don’t just go back to normal overnight. If you’re planning on having a vaginal birth, you’ll want something to help soothe your precious lady parts and this Postpartum Soothing Spray will do the trick!

Natural remedy

After giving birth vaginally, the hospital provided me with a numbing spray to help with pain relief. I was excited about this glorious spray until I turned the bottle over and peeked at the ingredients.

My eyes immediately locked on one of the first three ingredients: butane. Hold up—they want me to spray my sore private parts with an ingredient that’s used as fuel for cigarette lighters? I’ll take a hard pass on that one!

Once I got home and settled in, I experimented with natural ways to help relieve inflammation and acute pain. What I came up with was this Postpartum Soothing Spray, which I used along with Homemade Postpartum Cold Packs.

Made with only non-toxic, all-natural ingredients, this Postpartum Soothing Spray is something you can feel comfortable using on your delicate tissue “down under.” It helps comfort irritated areas, alleviate pain and heal torn tissue. It’s a must-have for your postpartum healing!

What you’ll need

Why these ingredients work

Aloe vera: Aloe is incredibly calming for the skin. It has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antioxidant properties that aid in healing, making it fantastic for soothing pain and reducing inflammation. Check to make sure it’s pure aloe vera—nothing scented or with additional chemicals, alcohol or additives in it.

Witch hazel: Witch hazel acts as a toner on the inflamed and swollen tissue. It can reduce swelling, pain and bruising. It also helps relieve itching and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids. Many store-bought brands can contain more alcohol than witch hazel, which can be drying. Look for double-distilled witch hazel, such as this one.

Calendula oil: This essential oil is derived from a flowering plant. It’s been shown to effectively help speed up skin healing, especially when used in combination with aloe vera gel. It also offers antibacterial and antiviral properties.

Lavender essential oil: Another superstar for recovery and relief, lavender has been shown to help soothe skin and promote healing.

Everyday ingredients for natural remedies

These ingredients may seem like an investment if this is your first homemade beauty or body care project. Don’t fret! They’re well worth it and can be used in other DIY projects. However, if you truly don’t want to invest in essential oils, you can eliminate them and the other ingredients in this spray will still help soothe and heal.

Made with only non-toxic, all-natural ingredients, this Postpartum Soothing Spray is something you can feel comfortable using on your delicate tissue “down under.” It helps comfort irritated areas, alleviate pain, and heal torn tissue. It’s a must-have for your postpartum healing!

Ingredients

Scale

Soothing Spray:

  • 1/4 cup witch hazel, alcohol free
  • 2 tablespoons pure unscented aloe vera
  • 3 tablespoons filtered water
  • 1 small (glass) spray bottle (glass helps maintain quality of the essential oil)

Essential Oils: (Optional)

  • 2 drops pure lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops pure calendula essential oil

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle. Shake well to combine. Apply to the perineum or spray onto feminine hygiene pads for a cooling effect.
  2. Store your spray for up to 6 weeks. We recommend keeping it in the fridge for “cooling” relief and to increase longevity.

Notes

Because this solution contains distilled water and there’s no preservative to prevent bacteria from growing in the water, you’ll want to use it within a few weeks. Maximize the shelf life by storing it in the refrigerator.
