  • Streamlines meal preparation, granting you more time to savor the things you love

What do you look for in a rice cooker?

As with any kitchen appliance, the choice of the best rice cooker is contingent upon your unique requirements and budget. Some things to consider:

  • What features would you like it to have?
    • Possibilities include a delay cook setting or a keep warm function.
  • What size do you need?
    • Make sure the capacity is the right fit for your family.
  • Are you looking for versatility?
    • If you want to use your rice cooker to cook more than rice, opt for a model that has additional features and settings.
  • What material is it made of?
    • Options include non-stick, stainless steel or ceramic.
  • Does it have a detachable inner lid?
    • A detachable lid simplifies cleaning.
  • Does it have a setting for brown rice?
    • Settings allow you to choose from white rice, brown rice, oatmeal or other grains.

What's the best rice cooker to cook rice in?

The key is to choose based on your needs, what type of rice you are cooking and to always make sure it has a keep warm function. Our overall favorite choices are:

The Instant Pot 6-Cup Rice Cooker

  • Pros: The rice cooker boasts a large capacity, yet maintains a relatively compact design, rendering it well-suited for compact kitchens.
  • Cons: The timer initiates its countdown only during the final 10 minutes. Until you’ve employed it on multiple occasions and have mentally noted its timing, coordinating your meal preparation with it can be challenging.

AROMA Digital 8-Cup Rice Cooker

  • Pros: We like how the display includes how much time is left in the cook cycle, and it produced rice with a perfect fluffy texture.
  • Cons: The instructions mention that placing the inner pot in the dishwasher might result in cosmetic alterations.

Do I need to soak my rice before cooking it?

Generally speaking, you don’t need to soak your rice before cooking it. Many modern rice cookers include a specific brown rice setting that accommodates soaking time.

If your rice cooker lacks a dedicated brown rice setting, you’ll need to soak whole-grain rice overnight OR for a minimum of 3 hours to ensure proper cooking. Check the packaging or instructions for recommended soaking times.

Do I need to rinse my rice before cooking it?

Although rinsing your rice prior to cooking is not necessary, we highly suggest doing so. Rice tends to come with a good amount of surface starch. Rinsing off the excess starches prevents your rice from turning gummy during the cooking process. A thorough rinse also allows the individual grains to cook better.

To do this, place the rice in a fine, mesh colander and run cool water over it in the sink. Use a swirling motion with your hand while rinsing the rice to free it from excess starch.

What is the ratio of rice to water in a rice cooker?

Whole-grain rice typically requires slightly more water than white rice. A general rule of thumb is around 1.5 to 2 cups of water per cup of rice. Refer to your rice cooker’s instructions for the best water-to-rice ratio.

Ways to Flavor Your Rice

Flavoring brown rice after it’s been cooked in a rice cooker can add variety and make your meals more delicious. Here are some creative and tasty ways to flavor your cooked brown rice:

  • Herbs and Spices: Sprinkle chopped fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, basil or chives over the cooked rice. Add spices such as cumin, paprika, turmeric or curry powder to infuse rich flavors. These herb shears are an amazing way to minimize chopping. They save so much time in the kitchen and are something we would highly recommend if you frequently use fresh herbs in your meals.
  • Citrus Zest and Juice: Grate the zest of citrus fruits like lemon, lime or orange over the rice. Squeeze a bit of the juice for a refreshing and tangy kick.
  • Toasted Nuts and Seeds: Lightly toast nuts (like almonds, walnuts or pine nuts) and seeds (like sesame or sunflower seeds) and mix them into the rice for crunch and nuttiness.
  • Sautéed Onions and Garlic: In a separate pan, sauté diced onions and minced garlic until they’re golden brown and aromatic. Mix them into the rice for added depth of flavor.
  • Soy Sauce or Tamari: Drizzle a bit of low-sodium soy sauce or tamari over the rice for a savory umami taste. Add some sautéed vegetables for a quick stir-fry-inspired dish.
  • Coconut Milk: Mix in a splash of coconut milk for a creamy and tropical flavor. This works especially well with Asian and Caribbean-inspired dishes.
  • Fresh Salsa: Top the rice with a spoonful of fresh salsa or pico de gallo for a burst of freshness and a hint of heat.
  • Fruit Additions: Mix in diced dried fruits (like cranberries, raisins or apricots) for a touch of natural sweetness and contrasting texture.
  • Stir-Fry Sauce: Toss the rice with a homemade or store-bought stir-fry sauce for an instant burst of flavor.
  • Greek Yogurt or Sour Cream: Add a dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream to the rice for creaminess and a tangy flavor.
  • Blanched or Roasted Vegetables: Combine blanched or roasted vegetables (like bell peppers, asparagus, zucchini or carrots) with the rice to create a wholesome and flavorful meal.
  • Black Beans, Lemon Juice and Cilantro: These additions add flavor and protein!
  • Fresh Pesto: Mix in a spoonful of fresh pesto for a burst of aromatic herbs and rich olive oil.
  • Hot Sauce, Finely Chopped Jalapeño, Crushed Red Pepper Flakes or Chili Paste: For those who enjoy a spicy kick, add your favorite spice to the rice.
  • Cheese: Sprinkle grated Parmesan, feta, or crumbled goat cheese over the rice for a rich and indulgent twist.
  • Nutritional Yeast (Vegan-friendly): Sprinkle nutritional yeast over the rice for a cheesy and slightly nutty flavor, along with added vitamins and minerals.

Remember that the key to successful flavoring is balance. Start with a small amount of the chosen flavoring, taste and adjust as needed. Combine multiple flavoring options to create your own signature rice dish that suits your taste preferences.

Storing Your Rice

You can store your cooked rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 6 days OR freeze it for up to 3 months. However, considering the ease of using a rice cooker for preparation, you might find it more appealing to prepare fresh batches for each meal.

Reheating Your Rice

Reheating on the stove: You can reheat your rice in a skillet by adding a few tablespoons of water and a little bit of EVOO to rehydrate the grains.

Reheating in the microwave: To reheat rice in the microwave, place it in a bowl with a few tablespoons of water. Cover the bowl with a damp paper towel and microwave in 30-second intervals until warmed through. Fluff rice between each interval.

How to Make the Best Rice in a Cooker

  • Measure properly. Use the cup that comes with your rice cooker to measure the rice and water.
  • Rinse the rice. Before cooking, rinse the rice thoroughly to remove excess starch, which can cause the rice to become gummy.
  • Use the proper water-to-rice ratio. Most rice cookers come with recommended water-to-rice ratios. Follow these guidelines for the specific type of whole-grain rice you’re cooking. Generally, it’s around 1.5 to 2 cups of water per cup of rice.
  • Add salt and flavors. For better flavor, consider adding a pinch of salt to the water before cooking. You can also add herbs, spices or a small amount of broth to enhance the taste of the rice.
  • Use the right setting. Many modern rice cookers have different settings for different types of rice, such as white rice, brown rice or whole-grain rice. Make sure to select the appropriate setting for whole-grain rice.
  • Keep the lid closed. Once you’ve started the cooking cycle, keep the lid closed until the rice is fully cooked. Opening the lid can cause steam to escape and affect the cooking process. Trust the cooker’s timer and wait until it’s finished.
  • Let it rest. After the rice cooker indicates that the rice is done, let it rest for 10-15 minutes with the lid on. This allows the rice to steam and finish cooking evenly.
  • Fluff the rice. Once the resting time is over, use a fork or rice paddle to gently fluff the rice. This helps to separate the grains and prevent clumping.
  • Maintain your cooker. Regularly clean your rice cooker to prevent residue buildup that can affect cooking performance and rice quality.
  • Make ratio adjustments. If you find that the rice is too dry or too sticky, you can adjust the water-to-rice ratio slightly in your future cooking attempts until you achieve the desired consistency.
  • Consider mix-ins. You can add vegetables to many modern rice cookers along with the rice for a complete one-pot meal. We’ve tried this and while it works, we prefer to blanch or roast the veggies and add them after the rice is cooked, then fluff them together.

Ways to Reinvent Your Leftovers

  • As-is, served as a simple side dish (paired with meat, fish, Asian food, Mexican food, the sky is the limit!)
  • As the base for bowls. Our personal favorite is a burrito bowl—just add beans, veggies, salsa and avocados.
  • In a burrito (bean, breakfast or meat)
  • Topped with a sunny-side-up egg for breakfast
  • Used in a stir-fry
  • Served with Shredded Salsa Verde Chicken
  • Paired with grilled kabobs
  • Stuffed in peppers
  • With a falafel bowl and a few scoops of hummus

  • Method: One Pot, Too Easy

Description

With our Easiest and Best Rice Cooker Recipe, you’ll consistently achieve rice perfection without the guesswork. It’s a game-changer that brings out the best in your rice cooker, transforming every meal into a culinary delight.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain (whole-grain) rice OR brown basmati rice
  • 1 teaspoon salt OR Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1.5 cups water (adjust for different rice types)

Equipment

Instructions

Rinse the Rice

Measure 1 cup of rice using the measuring cup provided. Rinse the rice under cold water in a fine-mesh strainer until the water runs clear. This step removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.

Cook the Rice

  1. Transfer the rinsed rice to the rice cooker’s inner pot.
  2. Measure 1.5 cups of water using the measuring cup. The general rule of thumb is to use a 1:1.5 ratio of rice to water, but you can adjust this slightly based on your rice cooker’s instructions and the type of rice you’re using.
  3. Pour the water over the rice in the cooker.
  4. Optional: Add a teaspoon of salt to the rice and water mixture for seasoning. You can also add a tablespoon of butter or oil at this stage to enhance the flavor and texture of the rice.
  5. Place the inner pot into the rice cooker and close the lid securely.
  6. Depending on your rice cooker model, select the appropriate cooking mode. Most modern rice cookers have a brown rice setting. If your cooker offers different settings, choose the one suitable for the rice you’re using.
  7. Press the start button to begin the cooking process. The rice cooker will automatically adjust the temperature and cooking time based on the selected mode.
  8. Once the rice cooker completes its cycle and switches to the warm mode (indicated by a light or signal), let the rice sit undisturbed for about 10 minutes. This allows the steam to evenly distribute, resulting in fluffier rice.
  9. Open the rice cooker lid and use a fork or spoon to gently fluff the rice, separating any clumps.
  10. Your perfectly cooked, fluffy and flavorful rice is now ready to be served as a delightful side dish or base for your favorite stir-fries, curries and more.
